With some 11,000 companies, the economic region Cologne is one of the most important ICT locations in Germany. It is home to both big players and numerous small or medium-sized enterprises.
Whether they are IT service providers, hosting experts, or software or app developers, many of the companies based in Cologne are market leaders in their sector – some even on a European or global scale. Things are not much different with the companies which use the internet as a marketplace, form communities or promote the intermeshing of the online and offline worlds.
Cologne is also home to major cable network operators and cloud providers, and has a correspondingly modern infrastructure with almost comprehensive broadband coverage, a fibre optic network and free public WLAN. And Cologne’s ICT scene is continuing to evolve. This is due in part to the many start-ups which find ideal conditions to establish themselves and whose founders not infrequently come from Cologne’s renowned educational institutions. But it is also the result of the attraction of companies such as Microsoft: The software giant has set up its headquarters in North Rhine-Westphalia in Rheinauhafen.
The dynamism of the ICT location is also reinforced by the numerous associations and initiatives which repeatedly provide the sector with new incentives: It is no coincidence that many important events and leading trade fairs take place in Cologne.
